Some of New Zealand's most highly accoladed wines are produced from the limestone and clay hillsides of this small region, known for Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.  The climate is favourable for cool climate viticulture and the area boasts a diverse range of soil types from varying forms of limestone, calcareous greensands and mudstones, and also clays and clay loams. There are around 80 producers in the region with most focusing on small batch wine production.
