The small village of Martinborough and the surrounding plantings are situated on an elevated terrace composed of relatively young river sediments, with varying lenses of sand and silt.  The water draining from the surrounding limestone hills is thought to contribute to the distinctively elegant Martinborough style.  There are many iconic producers in this small region, famous first for Pinot noir.  Syrah also does particularly well and there are some stunning examples.
