Famous for a vibrant expression of Sauvignon blanc, most plantings in the main Wairau Valley are on alluvial gravels, with some clay bound greywacke gravels on elevated north-facing terraces.  In the cooler Awatere Valley there are also greywacke conglomerates, siltstones and mudstones in addition to alluvial gravel.  Members of www.manaorganicwines.co.nz represent a core group of premium producers, a number of whom bring old world expertise to the region.
