A dramatic backdrop of snow covered mountains, glacier fed rivers and pristine lakes is the setting for the southern most wine region in the world. Most plantings in Central Otago are on gravel and loess soils, derived from the surrounding schist mountains. Pinot noir is the focus, and Riesling is also very well suited to the cool climate and mineral rich soils. Central Otago is comprised of a handful of sub-regions and given the small geographic area and relative uniformity of soil type across the region it is interesting to observe the distinct characteristics and styles evolving from each zone. We look forward to the continued exploration and development of higher elevation and bedrock schist sites.
